They have been my favorite metal band longer than some of you have been alive lol! And yeah, I even have <strong>Voivod<\/strong> in the coveted back patch position on my metal vest. Can I post a truly fair review of their latest platter? All systems go&#8230;!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> My first exposure and love of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/voivod.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Voivod<\/a><\/strong> goes all the way back to mid to late 80s, with their first four albums: \u201c<em>War and Pain<\/em>\u201d, \u201c<em>Rrr\u00f6\u00f6\u00f6aaarrr<\/em>\u201d, my all-time favorite <strong>Voivod<\/strong> album \u201c<em>Killing Technology<\/em>\u201d, and \u201c<em>Dimension Hatr\u00f6ss<\/em>\u201d. Hell, I even had the balls to blatantly copy lyrics from those albums and turn them in as my own for English poetry homework assignments lol<sup>1<\/sup>. The band has had lots of highs and maybe some lows \u2013 sorry <strong>Jason Newsted<\/strong>, the albums you played bass on with the band back in the `00s just aren\u2019t that great \u2013 but the band has never failed to put out interesting albums. Their hard work, attention to detail, and commitment to their weird sci-fi prog metal ideals were rewarded when \u201c<em>The Wake<\/em>\u201d, by all rights a monumental album, won the band a Juno Award<sup>2<\/sup> in 2018. How do you follow up to that, especially in The Age of COVID? Answer: 2022\u2019s \u201c<em>Synchro Anarchy<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> After I heard the singles ahead of this release (\u201c<em><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/lvHjNcjMqvU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Planet Eaters<\/a><\/em>\u201d. \u201c<em><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/sIgY8LNK8H4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Paranormalium<\/a><\/em>\u201d, and \u201c<em><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/hryt9k8Zql8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Syncho Anarchy<\/a><\/em>\u201d), I was reasonably optimistic of the new release at the time. I was hearing fresh material from my favorite band, and that\u2019s always cool, right? Hell, I was even hearing chonky\/weird tidbits that are no doubt throwbacks to \u201c<em>Killing Technology<\/em>\u201d, and \u201c<em>Dimension Hatr\u00f6ss<\/em>\u201d. Fuck yeah!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"VOIVOD - Planet Eaters (OFFICIAL VIDEO)\" width=\"1140\" height=\"641\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lvHjNcjMqvU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As per usual, I got the new <strong>Voivod<\/strong> album the very day it was released, and had it playing that very same evening. But after having listened to this album several times now, both by way of the intended track order and a randomized shuffle, I\u2019m having a bit of a hard time picking out many of the tracks as being overly memorable. There\u2019s a lot here \u2013 but just not a lot here that sticks in my head by the time the last track fades out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s not to say that there aren\u2019t some interesting tracks here to investigate. \u201c<em>Planet Eaters<\/em>\u201d is a cool track with a fair bit going on (the video is cool AF too) that reminds me of the underrated Eric Forrest albums. \u201c<em>Sleeves Off<\/em>\u201d has a fun proggy surf-rock thing going on that is reminiscent of the \u201c<em>Angel Rat<\/em>\u201d album. \u201c<em>Holographic Thinking<\/em>\u201d fits in with the \u201c<em>Target Earth<\/em>\u201d and \u201c<em>The Wake<\/em>\u201d albums\u2019 vibes nicely, and \u201c<em>The World Today<\/em>\u201d has a definite \u201c<em>Nothingface<\/em>\u201d look&amp;feel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"VOIVOD - Sleeves Off (OFFICIAL VIDEO)\" width=\"1140\" height=\"641\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-4hDSNieOnA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But maybe all of that is also perhaps why this album doesn\u2019t fully 100% click with me (yet?); it\u2019s hodge-podge of nods both great and small to previous <strong>Voivod<\/strong> albums perhaps dilutes this album&#8217;s own individuality. Maybe the somewhat incoherent \u201cthrow everything at the wall and see what sticks\u201d nature of this album that slightly affects it\u2019s overall memorability? I honestly don&#8217;t know. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sonically, this is one of the best sounding albums the boys have put out in a long time. New-ish guy Rocky on bass sounds superb here, and is tight as fuck in sync with Away, while also making sure his bass is distinct and dare I say fun to listen to here. Chewy on guitar always brings new and interesting things to the table; he&#8217;s not shy about using any and all influences for his rhythm and leads. Is that an Allan Holdsworth riff? Is that arpeggio from some never-used exotic scale? You never know, and that&#8217;s what makes his playing so enjoyable to delve into. And Snake on vocals? Come on now &#8212; you know Snake always delivers the goods. As such, all of the pieces of the puzzle are here, for what it&#8217;s worth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My gut-feel suspicion is that this album will probably grow on me over time, the way it took me a while to get into and appreciate \u201c<em>Target Earth<\/em>\u201d for example. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But in the meantime, I see no reason to not recommend this album, even if it\u2019s a bit of a grower not a shower in my mind so far. After all, even a slightly incoherent <strong>Voivod<\/strong> album is still very much worth investigating, indeed! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div
