Much like their post-Y2K peers (<strong>Havok<\/strong>, <strong>Violator<\/strong>, <strong>Warbringer<\/strong>, et al)\u2026, I\u2019ve never been quite sold on their \u201c<strong>D.R.I<\/strong> + <strong>Nuclear Assault<\/strong> alcoholic lovechild\u201d NWOUSTM<sup>1<\/sup> vibe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, it was only when I was doing some research where I think I figured out at least <em>some<\/em> of the <strong>Municipal Waste<\/strong> secret sauce: live gigs such as this frenetic 2018 gig in a Sacramento biker club house is where their short powerpukes of thrashy thrash make the most sense:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Municipal Waste (full set) live in Sacramento, California 02\/24\/18\" width=\"1140\" height=\"641\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4gUxC_hsC5E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So with that in the back of my mind, I went into their new album with something approaching cautious optimism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While doing my research for this review, I did a complete YouTube run through each and every one of the previous <strong>Municipal Waste<\/strong> six full-length albums. Honestly, very few of the songs stuck in my head. The band has their very set formulae, including maximizing the chugs-per-minute, keeping the short songs short and very much to the point, few tricks or flourishes&#8230;, no hits, no runs, no errors. Many of the same riffs, over and over. Much of the same vox, over and over (and over&#8230;). And any guitar solos are fairly few and far between.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"681\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sdmetal.org\/msm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/0011303401_10.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1518\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sdmetal.org\/msm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/0011303401_10.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.sdmetal.org\/msm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/0011303401_10-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sdmetal.org\/msm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/0011303401_10-768x511.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But at least here we do have some stand-outs that break out of that rut. With songs like \u201c<em>High Speed Steel<\/em>\u201d, we have a some lyrical variety. \u201c<em>Demoralizer<\/em>\u201d and \u201c<em>The Bite<\/em>\u201d both feature nifty solos. \u201c<em>Blood Vessel \/ Boat Jail<\/em>\u201d would have been better off as an instrumental, IMO. \u201c<em>Barreled Rage<\/em>\u201d channels <strong>Nuclear Assault<\/strong> in the same way that \u201c<em>Ten Cent Beer Night<\/em>\u201d is clearly an <em>Amerikaner<\/em> channeling of <strong>Tankard<\/strong>. \u201c<em>Putting on Errors<\/em>\u201d sounds like a reverb-less <strong>Power Trip<\/strong> outtake. And so on and so forth.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 666px; height: 472px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=638555461\/size=large\/bgcol=333333\/linkcol=0f91ff\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/municipal-waste.bandcamp.com\/album\/electrified-brain-2\">Electrified Brain by Municipal Waste<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall the songs here sound perhaps a tad more \u201cdeveloped\u201d. That might be due to that fact that the songs are just a tad longer than <strong>Municipal Waste<\/strong> average per album:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Album:<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.metal-archives.com\/albums\/Municipal_Waste\/Waste_%27Em_All\/19812\">Waste &#8216;Em All<\/a> (2003)<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.metal-archives.com\/albums\/Municipal_Waste\/Hazardous_Mutation\/89522\">Hazardous Mutation<\/a> (2005)<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.metal-archives.com\/albums\/Municipal_Waste\/The_Art_of_Partying\/153342\">The Art of Partying<\/a> (2007)<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.metal-archives.com\/albums\/Municipal_Waste\/Massive_Aggressive\/242027\">Massive Aggressive<\/a> (2009)<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.metal-archives.com\/albums\/Municipal_Waste\/The_Fatal_Feast_%28Waste_in_Space%29\/330387\">The Fatal Feast (Waste in Space)<\/a> (2012)<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.metal-archives.com\/albums\/Municipal_Waste\/Slime_and_Punishment\/646327\">Slime and Punishment<\/a> (2017)<br><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.metal-archives.com\/albums\/Municipal_Waste\/Electrified_Brain\/1030492\">Electrified Brain<\/a> (2022)<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Average Song Length:<br>1:04<br>1:42<br>2:03<br>2:10<br>2:15<br>2:03<br><strong>2:26<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But maybe that might all be putting to fine of a point on things \u2013 to try to put finesse to a review of an album from a band that is the antithesis of finesse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While I have no qualms with this album (or any of their albums, really)\u2026, I\u2019m still not 100% sold on what <strong>Municipal Waste<\/strong> brings to the table. In the vacuum of me sitting at home in front of my computer screens and a so-so audio system, maybe the band will never truly win me over. That&#8217;s not the venue that the band works in &#8212; nor am I sure that they want to work as a &#8220;studio band&#8221; <em>per se<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Live, I can 100% see me making the effort to check them out. But this album? If you\u2019re a fan, you\u2019ll like this. If you\u2019re not, this might win you over, it might not.
