I was remiss in keeping track of a lot of what came out in both the mainstream and the underground &#8212; spending a total of 198 days of the year on the road (mostly for work, with some fun here and there too!) &#8212; means I sorta lost track of what&#8217;s what. But I put my nose to the grindstone<sup>1<\/sup>, and gave it my best to play catch up, and I think I ran into a situation where I was loving <em>too much<\/em> for just a simple list lol! So here&#8217;s <strong>My Top 10, with Extra Hot Sauce on the Side!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>My Top 10 of 2022 List (in a half-ass order)<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/videoseries?list=OLAK5uy_mvmcneMTRB-vUc42uJ6TmEJHwISyBcySQ\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1)<\/strong> <strong>Blut Aus Nord<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/blutausnord.bandcamp.com\/album\/disharmonium-undreamable-abysses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201c<em>Disharmonium &#8211; Undreamable Abysses<\/em>\u201d<\/a><br><br>A band that thrives in the darkest of dark corners of obscurity, this album is an aural vortex of melodies, textures, and echos as you are mentally sucked in to (wait for it\u2026) an undreamable abyss. Every single time I put on a later day <strong>Blut Aus Nord<\/strong> album, I\u2019m hearing new things. Maybe not as quasi-approachable as their previous amazing album (\u201c<em>Hallucinogen<\/em>\u201c) &#8212; and that\u2019s exactly the way the band likes it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/videoseries?list=OLAK5uy_kjY-1EmfjsY8zbQnbu7yXYsSvcWBGMWqM\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2) Defleshed<\/strong>: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/defleshedofficial.bandcamp.com\/album\/grind-over-matter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cGrind over Matter\u201d<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was in Osaka Japan this past Summer, and found the <a href=\"https:\/\/midian.jp\/\">BAR MiDiAN<\/a>, a killer metal-oriented bar in the Umeda part of town. The owner was fucking cool as hell \u2013 and knew her Scandinavian Death Metal up and down, backwards and forwards. We both found ourself wondering whatever happened to <strong>Defleshed<\/strong>. A few months later, this amazing comeback popped up out of nowhere! This band wowed me in the early `00s, and they are right back to where they were, without missing a beat; still unashamed about going a bit corny with the album titles lol. Bonus: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/rockbarmidian\/photos\/a.702711163101568\/5851945314844768\/?__cft__[0]=AZX-c5BINWi-wHryDpu5m824GUhHceGKiqb8N6Omcz_gaxjm_I5LpmFMYcVduRZG95ewBSDkAnlsHv4bcq3vNDNPilmTeGWMhqOrxzRyOj9bhRrZxxskm7PWBS7dR9i_-bFS-3aHF0ZjIt5ZQo1oJL2EH1xjYmDG0WVs6FBt0Tuo0oO6nFEgaIk9TlYZ-GQe2po&amp;__tn__=EH-R\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the band actually stopped in at BAR MiDiAN recently<\/a> for much beer &amp; even more mayhem! <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/videoseries?list=OLAK5uy_mXAirZxqkGtyuUHbRQnDoqqGlA1Gy-mko\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3) Disillusion<\/strong>: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/disillusion-official.bandcamp.com\/album\/ayam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cAyam\u201d<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Difficult to describe, and very difficult to not be utterly wowed with the expansive breadth that this album covers in a relatively small and dare I say almost friendly package. This takes you on a journey you didn\u2019t know you wanted and\/or needed to take \u2013 and you are a better person at the end of the road. An utterly amazing album start to finish.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/videoseries?list=OLAK5uy_kZ5Y-UcP53Np48LPJW15iaMVw3ojnbHQo\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>4) Hammers Of Misfortune: <\/strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/hammersofmisfortune.bandcamp.com\/album\/overtaker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cOvertaker\u201d<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An easy pick for me \u2013 I fucking {heart} anything <strong>Slough Feg<\/strong> and <strong>Slough Feg<\/strong>-adjacent. And this band from John Cobbet has always drawn from a eclectic range of influences from his other bands. Some <strong>Hammers<\/strong> albums draw on his <strong>Slough Feg<\/strong> background, and some from his band <strong>Ludrica<\/strong>. This one clearly takes its queues from his <strong>Vhol<\/strong> side-project \u2013 and I\u2019m 100% all about that.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/videoseries?list=OLAK5uy_kZdwyfrVOEcoQGoY56yyvlanxtWGxvkDI\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>5) Epoch of Unlight:<\/strong> <em><a href=\"https:\/\/epochofunlight.bandcamp.com\/album\/at-war-with-the-multiverse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cAt War With the Multiverse\u201d<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An underdog pick for being in my Top 10. This band takes everything that was fun about speedy and well done melodic Swedish Death Metal \u2013 remember way back when <strong>In Flames <\/strong>and <strong>Dark Tranquility<\/strong> were fun back in the `90s? &#8212; and gives it a modern revisit. This band has had some starts and stops over the years \u2013 formed in the late `90s, with some respectable albums in the early `00s \u2013 and I\u2019m hoping this new one signals a greater push for quality in a genre that is otherwise a bit tired<sup>2<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/videoseries?list=OLAK5uy_nYtYH8R6FTgZ6_SPbY6sQnmxQP-2O1oLE\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>6) Voivod: <\/strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voivod.com\/en\/product\/synchro-anarchy-29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cSynchro Anarchy\u201d<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a huge <strong>Vovod<\/strong> fan, including this album here was a no-brainer. When I posted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sdmetal.org\/msm\/voivod-synchro-anarchy-review\/\">my review for this<\/a> back in February, I was at the time waiting for it to firmly sink in and stick to my ribs. Consider this album now firmly stuck with me \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/videoseries?list=OLAK5uy_kdmh2ZaRrn0LiHBy69X6HYxMGeAph7xbU\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>7) Freedom of Fear: <\/strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/freedomoffear.bandcamp.com\/album\/carpathia-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cCarpathia\u201d<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of several very-end-of-the-year finds for me, this is an interesting Aussie band that takes the guitar shredy wizardry of <strong>Necrophagist<\/strong>, bundles it with the Gothenburg sound, and blends in some <strong>Vektor<\/strong>-style pedal to the metal attitude (especially in the vocals). Curious if this band will ever get more of a buzz, since I never see anyone talking about them online.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/videoseries?list=OLAK5uy_mY4R1HMe2stoDQt11q1EoA9QDbciduqis\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>8) Paganizer: <\/strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/paganizer.bandcamp.com\/album\/beyond-the-macabre-death-metal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cBeyond The Macabre\u201d<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A band that folks certainly do talk about online. This band \u2013 one of <strong>Rogga Johansson<\/strong>\u2019s 59(!!) current and former projects \u2013 has 11 full-length albums, 7 EPs, 2 live albums, and a large handful of compilation and split appearance. So how am I the only one formerly ignorant of this? Oh well. I\u2019m now on board with this classically classy slice of Swede Death, that goes far above and beyond the standard \u201ccrank up the HM-2 to Angry Chainsaw mode and go from there\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/videoseries?list=PLvy6pw7WPyVBmVa8-WZprThEJ5Bv0WnU0\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>9) Pillaging Villagers: <\/strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/pillagingvillagers.bandcamp.com\/album\/pillaging-villagers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cSelf-Titled\u201d<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A pleasant surprise I stumbled across on Bandcamp. This is an one-man project that is unadulterated fucking fun! Yeah, screw those tyrant landlords, let\u2019s grab some pitchforks and torches and fuck `em up! The very best quote regarding this album, from a dude named Nate Collins on Bandcamp: <em>\u201c<\/em><em><strong>Dropkick Murphys<\/strong><\/em><em>, <\/em><em><strong>In Flames<\/strong><\/em><em>, <\/em><em><strong>Blind Guardian<\/strong><\/em><em>, and <\/em><em><strong>Devin Townsend<\/strong><\/em><em> walk into a bar\u2026&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/videoseries?list=OLAK5uy_mqp0D1yzzFk1hG_3xQ5XSDcbGmlBNIR40\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>10) Toxik: <\/strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/toxikmetal.net\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cDis Morta\u201d<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now this\u2026. Where the hell did this come from?? A thrash metal band I\u2019ve always been aware of, but not necessarily in sync with. The dumb album artwork (with some sort of angry suit-wearing clown for a mascot?) always distracted me from doing deep dives into their generally well-regarded first two albums. (Aside: the art &amp; dumb mascot thing used to push me away from <strong>EvilDead<\/strong><sup>3<\/sup>, too). But this album\u2026. Holy fuck. It\u2019s like everyone involved brought a different bottle of bottom-shelf cheap booze to a party and dumped them into the 5 gallon cooler, and the resulting rot gut schwill is somehow far greater than it\u2019s individual parts. The need to edit and weed out some messy bits, and some of the \u201cinteresting\u201d production choices, keep this album from getting higher marks from me. But this album is still gonzo nuts, and a blast to\u2026, well, <em>blast<\/em> at a BYOB party.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Honorable Mentions (in no particular order<\/strong>)<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\"><strong>Phantom Spell<\/strong> &#8212; <em>\u201cImmortal&#8217;s Requiem\u201d<\/em><br>The band you never knew you wanted until now: if <strong>Styx<\/strong>, <strong>Blue Oyster Cult<\/strong>, and <strong>Rainbow<\/strong> got high and start goofing around with an Ouija board, this weirdo love-child would the result. Signature track: <a href=\"https:\/\/phantomspell.bandcamp.com\/track\/seven-sided-mirror\">Seven Sided Mirror<\/a><\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\"><strong>Autonoesis<\/strong> &#8212; <em>\u201cMoon of Foul Magics\u201d<\/em><br>Canadian Thrash Metal is always a bit different, and this young band dials in the weirdness, by blending the thrash stylings of <strong>Sacrifice<\/strong>, <strong>Paradox<\/strong>, <strong>Coroner<\/strong>, etc with some subtle nods to Black Metal bands such as <strong>Absu<\/strong>, <strong>Abigor<\/strong>, and <strong>Summoning<\/strong>. A band with a lot more going on that first meets the eye (uh, ear, that is). Your side-quest: investigate <a href=\"https:\/\/highcommandsl.bandcamp.com\/track\/siege-warfare\">\u201cSiege Warfare\u201d<\/a><\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-left\" data-align=\"left\"><strong>Queensr\u00ffche<\/strong> &#8212; \u201cDigital Noise Alliance\u201d<br>There\u2019s been reams of real and virtual paper dedicated to all of the drama with this band, their infamous former vocalist, the ye olde <em>\u201cWho owns the band name?\u201d<\/em> legal thing, etc etc, blah blah. This ain&#8217;t about that. The New Guy On Vocals (who has actually been with the band for 10 years) has slowly been feeding into a good buzz regarding modern-day <strong>Queensr\u00ffche. <\/strong>I have to say that he does do a good job here, and the song writing has picked up some mighty fine inertia, too. All of the songs click for me here (I especially liked the semi-proggy vibe of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RcOYiGUr3Iw\">Behind The Walls<\/a>\u201d).
